The Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies
United International College has established a Regional Economic
Development Research Institute (REDRI) within the Division of Business
and Management since January 2007。。
The Institute will conduct
researches on regional economic development with initial focus on the
Pan Pearl River Delta Area。。 With the accession of China into the World
Trade Organization and the rapid development of China’s economy over
the past decades, it is perceivable that regional collaboration will
become increasingly important。。 New trends of economic development, the
emergence of new industries, augmented by the rapid build up of infra
structure in transportation and communication, has greatly transformed
the state of the economy into a regional one。。 Internationalization and
globalization have forced open tremendous opportunities and challenges
to governments at both local and regional levels, national corporations
and global corporations alike。。 Nevertheless, as yet there has been
little high profile and systemic research conducted on the trend of
emerging regional economic development to-date。。 Strategically located
in Zhuhai and with easy and effective access to data and players in
this region, UIC’s Division of Business and Management is placed in a
unique position that renders our research on this very important trendy
aspect an integral part of our endeavor。。 As one of its first research
projects, UIC REDRI will collaborate with the Statistics and
Computational Intelligence Research Center in the Division of Science
and Technology of UIC for the collection and analysis of pertinent data
to design a composite cultural socio and economic sustainability index
as a measurement of growth and devleopment for the region。。 Regional
economic collaboration is one of the mega trends in the post Second
World Era, exemplified by the North American Regional Economy and the
European Regional Economy。。 Bringing together the diverse expertise and
experience available from Zhuhai, Shenzhen, augmented by Hong Kong and
Macao, and assisted by resources available in the provinces of
Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Anhui, Sichuan, Chongqing, Yunnan
and Hubei, it is conceivable that this South China region will also
quickly emerge as one of the world’s largest regional economies in the
decades to come。。
